UNIZA, together with ERAdiate, takes part in a new H2020 funded project on the integration of physical sensing to data processing in the context of smart buildings. The kick-off meeting of the SENSors and Intelligence in BuiLt Environment (SENSIBLE) project and the first SENSIBLE Workshop on Smart Buildings and Smart Transport were hosted by UNIZA on 4-5 April 2017.

Three universities, one national research council and 3 companies from 4 European countries are working together on the possibilities of sensors and their utilisation in smart building and smart parking areas. In addition to these 7 consortium members, a partnership agreement is about to be signed with 4 universities from non-European countries, namely Australia, Canada, China and Japan.

The objective of the project is to develop novel information sensing research and innovation approaches for acquiring, communicating and processing a large volume of heterogeneous datasets in the context of smart buildings. To achieve this objective, an international, inter-disciplinary and inter-sectoral collaboration network will be built through research and innovation staff exchanges and seamless exchange of ideas, expertise, data, testbeds, and know-how.

The first part of the kick-off meeting addressed the outcomes for individual work packages and implementation rules. The secondment plan was also discussed and updated in order to improve the exchange of expertise required for the successful implementation of the project.

On the second day of the meeting, UNIZA organised a workshop which presented research activities related to smart buildings and intelligent transport systems. Talks were given by both PhD students and experienced researchers from UNIZA. Dr. Ambrosch, ERA Chair Holder, delivered a presentation on the use of sensors in intelligent transport systems.

Based on these presentations, the partners discussed the possible testbed features that will be established within the project. New ideas and possibilities were identified and will help to develop state-of-the-art testbeds.

In addition to getting a better understanding of the project management rules, and to review the first steps of the project, the participants had the opportunity to share ideas, address key questions and identify potential solutions, which is an important factor for the successful implementation of the project.
